Everything is cruising along perfectly...you hit a snag. It all too often happens in the last few weeks leading up to a race. I read where a friend of mine crashed on a ride yesterday even. Anyway, Thursday morning was my standard run workout. This one was to the track for a set of 2k repeats...4 of them at between 10k and 1/2 Marathon pace with short rest. No problem, we'd been doing tempo and other runs the same speed or faster. Anyway, 1 and 2 were done and in the books. 4 laps into #3 I felt a little twinge in my calf, but it was nothing. Finished off #4, did the cool down, and my calf was a wreck for the rest of the day.
I laid off of running as planned on Friday, and stuck with my scheduled massage. I did a short transition run after my long ride yesterday, but canceled my long run today. I'm going to assume that it's not much of anything, and a few days off, some rehab, seeing Dr. Sellers at Performance Wellness, will do the trick. Anytime an athlete gets a twinge or an injury the questions come up...
Was it the shoes?
Was I ready for the workout?
Was it hydration?
What was the cause?
I don't know, but I'm in a bit of a quandary. I am supposed to race 70.3 Worlds in 2 weeks. After that, unbeknownst to many, I am going to go back to the Ironman distance for a go at Ironman Arizona 2 weeks later...4 weeks from now. So, the question becomes, what to do? I think that the answer is manage things and fix them now. If it works to go to 70.3 Worlds, I'll go race it. If not, I won't. If it works to do IMAz, I'll go race it. If not, I won't. I don't want to be blogging here in 2 weeks saying that I went ahead and raced knowing I wasn't 100%, especially if I put up a result that I'm not too happy with. I'd rather toe the line healthy and ready to go and then bomb than have a ready made reason why things didn't go well...it's always been that way. Nor do I want to go race and really damage something. We'll see...stay tuned since I know you are on the edge of your seats!

Was the decision to race IM AZ long in the works and just now revealed for dramatic effect?..or last minute decision in general?
and yes I am literally tittering in anticipation to hear how the next 4 weeks go!
Make sure you take care of yourself and don't push an injury. Kent is living proof you don't want to run your pain. He hasn't run competitively, now, for over a year. =( Maybe it was just pre-race phatom pains. I get those. I've got my fingers crossed for you.
