So, this is week #3 of the UT cycling study in which I am participating. I think that I explained it a little. But, the study is comparing the effectiveness of sports drinks. They haven't told us exactly what they are, but I suspect that one has carbohydrate only, one has carbohydrates and protein, and the third is likely a different carbohydrate and protein ratio. My familiarization trial was with water only. Let me say this about exercising...calories are your friend. I think that I rode about 3:20 with water only. I think that I rode 3:45 and 3:40 on the 2 sports drink trials.
I say I think because the only metrics that we have are cadence, speed, and calories. And, we get a drink every 20 minutes. So, my engineering mind cannot help but take over and I'm pretty sure that the times above are pretty close.
It is an interesting study because for 3 weeks Monday - Thursday I have to do the same workouts. So, this past week was pretty much the same as last week. My 20x100 and 20x400 swim and run workouts went about the same. I finished the run workout stronger than last week. My swim and bike this week on Tuesday were also about the same. Wednesday is and easy day.
I like repeating the weeks. I know exactly what I have to do each day of the week. I can compare each workout from week to week. I get another chance to nail a workout if it doesn't go quite like I want it to. Anyway, we'll see how it works as I think that I am going to go ahead and repeat the week again after this week when I'm officially done with the study.
Oh yeah. That Michael Phelps guy is pretty amazing don't you think? Smashed the field and smashed his own world record in his first event the 400IM. I'm going to suffer on sleep these next couple of weeks or at least until the swimming is over.
Stay tuned for another update in a day or so. Next race up might be the Xterra out in Camp Eagle next weekend. I've been hitting the dirt and it fits well with my repeat the week during the week and either train or race or both every 2 weeks on the weekend.
